Kids and adults everywhere are mining, crafting and Minecrafting together in a multiplayer world; players build social skills, improve their problem-solving skills, and use their creativity as they build together online. There are so many reasons why Minecraft is so good for you, it’s amazing.
On a public web server, players can work together to build bigger and better things than they could have done alone; however, you cannot control exactly who connects to public servers and who your child interacts with online. Great news! By creating your own server, you can know exactly who is connecting and playing in your child’s world.

Before you try to do any of this at home, these instructions are meant for parents to help their children. Therefore, children MUST have parental consent and choose a time to nurse and help. Setting up and running an online server means that anyone with your external IP address will be able to connect to your server and play in your Minecraft world. Think carefully about who you invite to play on your server!
Make sure you keep track of who you and your child invite to play on your server. The best way to keep your server safe and happy is to only invite players you know in real life. Lots of people online are great, but by limiting your server to the people you’ve met, you won’t have any surprises for your kids to meet.
Below you will find a video explaining how to set up a Minecraft server, followed by installation instructions. Good luck!

2. Once the download is complete, copy the minecraft_server.1.11.jar to a new folder on your computer and name this folder “Minecraft Server”.
Note: Over time, Minecraft will update to a new version so “1.11” – the version in which these instructions were originally written – will refer to an older download. That said, the commands above and below should still work, but the only one that says “1.11” will be replaced by whatever the new version number is.
Important: If you are using a different version of the server, change “minecraft_server.1.11.jar” to match the name of the version you are using.

The next step in the process involves configuring the settings on your router so that other users can access your computer through it. This process will be different for everyone, because it is based on the type of router you have.
If you can’t find your router listed on this site here are a few things to try:
Your external IP address will be either IPv4 or IPv6 and will look like one of the examples below:
Ubuntu 22.04 Minecraft Server Setup
When you get your external IP address, save this number – you’ll need it for other people to connect to your server.
Now that you have forwarded your connection, other players can connect using your external IP address. Make sure players accessing your server follow the steps below:
This will be your external IP followed by the port number: 25565 This will look like the address in the image to the right.
5. Click Finish. Now Minecraft will try to connect to the server. Once connected, select a server and click Join Server.

Invite Players to Join: Anyone you give your external IP address to will be able to play on your Minecraft server. Make sure you trust whoever you invite to play. It is safe to invite only people you know. Ask your parents before inviting new players to join.
You can also change other game settings using a file in the Server folder called Server.properties.
Open the file with any text editor, and you can change the properties of the Minecraft world by editing the lines of the file.
You do not need to change anything in this file for your server to work. Do not make changes to the file unless you are sure what you are doing.
