Lionel Richie will follow in the footsteps of his dear friend Michael Jackson, who spoke to the public 11 years ago, as well as former US presidents and world leaders. Lionel Richie spoke at the Historical Debate Center about the songwriting process, explaining how a song evolves from title, lyrics, and live performances. The speech will be followed by questions and answers, and it is expected that the whole event will last about an hour and a half. Before the address, Mr Ritchie will be given a tour of some of Oxford’s historic colleges and libraries.

The Gershwin Award, named after the two famous musicians George and Ira Gershwin, is given annually by the Library of Congress to an artist whose career reflects lifetime achievements in the development of music as a vehicle for musical expression and cultural understanding. Past honorees include Garth Brooks, Tony Bennett, Billy Joel, Carole King, Paul McCartney and Willie Nelson.
Before the show Richie, a native of Tuskegee, Alabama, was full of emotion on the red carpet. “It’s serious,” he said. “To get a hit record, yes. To get a Grammy, yes, even to get an Oscar … but the Library of Congress, the Gershwin Prize … as my grandmother would say, that’s high fives.

On stage, he reminded the audience what his career, his life, is all about: “Love is the only answer to everything we do,” he said. “I travel the world and people really want to tell me I love you. We’re all one big family, we’re all the same. We may live in different places, but these songs are popular and on the other side. The world as they are here in DC. I love you forever, the only words the world wants to hear.
On the banks of the River Trent on Friday, June 11, they will be joined by an as-yet-to-be-announced special guest.
While the green space is home to the annual Riverside Festival, it will be the first time such a concert has been held there since Bryan Adams headlined Park City in 2001. The show, which also features appeared on the James and Gabriel bill, moved from Wollaton Park due to foot and mouth problems.
The event is organized by DHP Family, who are also behind the Lionel Richie concert, and described as “Nottingham’s biggest headline show for decades.”

As well as a string of 70’s hits with the Commodores such as Three Times A Lady and Still, Richie has enjoyed worldwide success as a solo artist, selling over 100 million albums, winning an Oscar, a Golden Globe and four Grammy Awards.
Fans can expect the 71-year-old to perform many of his classic songs including Endless Love, Lady, Really, All Night Long, Simple, Stick to You, Hello, Tell Me, Tell Me and Dance on the Roof high.
“We are delighted to be bringing international megastar Lionel Richie to Nottingham next year,” said DHP Family Concerts promoter Scott O’Neill.
“Victoria Embankment is known and loved for its beautiful scenery and great location, making it the perfect venue for the biggest concert Nottingham has seen for decades. It’s almost 20 years since the venue has been used in this capacity, with Bryan Adams, Stranger Things and Little Jake playing Bank Holiday in 2001.
