It’s just over six hours from our home in North Carolina, and this short drive takes you up to 5,000 feet above sea level in the Great Smoky Mountains. This is so cool! There are so many things to do in Gatlinburg that we really enjoyed, so we took a very quick trip to spend about 24 hours in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Since it wasn’t that bad, we were able to make a quick mini-vacation. After hosting two companies back-to-back for a week, it was nice to go somewhere new, cook and clean for someone else, and enjoy the outdoors.
Additionally, Gatlinburg is home to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. If you ever get a chance to go there, I highly recommend it.

Ultimate Romantic Getaway In Gatlinburg Tn For Nature Lovers
I usually start my travel posts after breakfast, but this trip went just like that, and we made it in time for lunch. And so we begin this journey.
There are several chains on Gatlinburg’s main thoroughfare, but try to stick to local mom and pop shops when traveling. If they are in tourist towns, they rely on tourist dollars to survive. So, head to Tom and Earl’s Back Alley Grill (651 Parkway #110) for lunch. It’s actually in a little square behind the shops on the main road. I really enjoyed the Kickin’ Chicken Wrap, but it was a little heavy. My mom was looking forward to the beer fries, but they were too salty (unless you use ketchup). I opted for the potato salad instead and it was absolutely delicious.
Here’s a little tip. On Main Street in Gatlinburg is All Sauced Up (646 Parkway), a gift shop. You can buy local hot sauce, BBQ sauce and tons of kitchen gadgets. Bring your receipt to Tom and Earl’s for 15% off your bill if you make a purchase. You can bring your recipe from Tom and Earl to All Sauced Up to save 15%, but you’ll save even more if you shop at the sauce store first and save on food.
Now that your stomach is full, you want to get your fill of moonshine. Ole Smoky Moonshine (903 Parkway #128) is actually the first legal moonshine in Tennessee. It led the way for tons of other distilleries. The brand also has a branch of Ole Smoky Whiskey (650 Parkway), because Tennessee whiskey.
