Any type of disaster recovery must be measured against Service Level Agreements (SLAs) along with Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).
Baas Vs. Draas: 3 Key Differences To Know
Each organization will have multiple RPO and RTO values for different services. There is usually a trade-off between cost and recovery time. When considering on-premises DR or disaster recovery as a service, RPO and RTO offerings should meet business needs.
As a typical service model, disaster recovery as a service will replicate (and if necessary convert) physical or virtual servers to cloud infrastructure. In the event of a disaster or event affecting the uptime of the on-premises service, a transition to a cloud-based replica is initiated to maintain business continuity.
Low-level information varies by service and provider. The most common hypervisor for server virtualization in the data center is VMware. Let’s take a look at some of the disaster recovery as a service options available for VMware workloads.
You’ll notice that in addition to policy adjustments, the provider manages the entire update infrastructure. At the time of writing, VCDR is only available on AWS, and the recovery location is VMware Cloud AWS. In the future, this will also apply to other VMware-based disaster recovery providers, such as Microsoft Azure (Azure VMware Solution) and Google Cloud (Google Cloud VMware Engine).

In addition to the usual disasters that come to mind, such as power outages, natural disasters, hardware failures, or human error, VCDR is perfect for ransomware protection.
A typical VM-based disaster recovery replication model will replicate any type of damage or encryption introduced by ransomware, rendering replicas useless. Additionally, ransomware will likely look to backups as a first point of attack.

VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) has long been used by VI site administrators to ensure VM migration between sites. It uses vSphere Replication, included with vCenter licensing, to replicate VMs between sites with corresponding vCenter instances.

Site Recovery Manager can run custom scripts, change virtual machine IPs, check dependencies, and run rollback tests. A big difference between Site Recovery Manager and solutions like Disaster Recovery as a Service is that SRM requires the recovery site to be online and available to copy VM data and host site-reserved VMs ready for recovery.
Site Recovery Manager can be used in the same way as on-premises for cloud recovery with SRM installed in both locations. In this type of setup, the customer is responsible for installing and configuring SRM at both sites, while the cloud service provider maintains the underlying infrastructure.
While it may not be fully managed disaster recovery as a service and could perhaps be described as a self-service DRaaS, it provides flexibility and use cases:
VMware Site Recovery provides the same features and benefits as SRM, except that the solution is available as Software as a Service (SaaS).
Draas To Defend Critical Applications
VMware Site Recovery is currently only available with VMware Cloud on AWS or with a hybrid site linking on-premises and VMware Cloud on AWS. These recovery models could be called those that fall between assisted DRaaS and self-service DRaaS.
In the previous example, VMware Site Recovery was enabled from the VMware Cloud console without any installation. VM-level switching can be configured between VMware Clouds in AWS zones or Availability Regions.
In the latter example, the customer installs SRM locally and enables VMware Site Recovery for VMware Cloud on the AWS recovery site. A hybrid setup works like this:

What Is Disaster Recovery As A Service (draas)
The solution implements an active-active fully automated DR solution for all critical applications and an active-passive service for non-critical applications. An advanced monitoring solution is also implemented to monitor and alert on availability and performance metrics. The customer has full access to real-time tracking data.
All Garat Cloud services are virtual, including application servers, security services (firewall, IPS and WAF) and load balancers. The L3 MPLS link between the two data centers enables storage synchronization, database synchronization, active-active service access from the load balancer, and cluster and state data synchronization. All services are available to end-users from both data centers and the primary DC (customer data center) is prioritized according to load balancing rules.
External access from the Internet uses automatic application-level deduplication for SSL VPN access and DNS-level deduplication for published web resources. Multiparty BGP would also be available for Internet access, but the customer did not consider it necessary after evaluating the current solution.
A managed DR solution is fully supported by SLA (Service Level Agreement) for MPLS connection availability, RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and quality of service metrics, as well as support and management tasks.
