This study examines the relationship between happiness and cultural tourism, taking Spain’s European Holy Grail route as a tourism factor. Above all, the question arises as to whether cultural tourism can promote understanding and social cohesion. Does that mean that tourists and hosts are happier? What and how can we learn from cultural tourism as a peaceful means of peace? In particular, a qualitative approach was developed in which people from organizations involved in the approach were interviewed. Case analysis (through interviews) was conducted through grounded theory. The reason why happiness and social cohesion are improved due to positive experiences is observed in the first part of the results, and the respondents present and analyze the Ten Commandments of social export of tourism experiences and present them as research suggestions.

Happiness has been a philosophical and social problem since the beginning of time and has been studied in various academic fields. Tourism research has also focused on this and the concept of health in recent decades [1]. Happiness is an important part of the tourism experience[2]. More recently, Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH)[3] and the United Nations (UN) World Happiness Report (WHR) (2019)[4], both indexes and reports understand how people perceive individual and collective happiness. and to find the main identifiable factors associated with happiness. In this study, we understand happiness as the feeling of living a good life, which can result from a person’s expectations, beliefs, personality traits, and social and cultural values such as positive feelings of well-being (QOL). As emotions related to overall judgment [5] . In addition, awareness of the weakness of this concept is considered in that there are many factors (religion, morality, personality, etc.) that affect the self-view of happiness and social and cultural factors that determine its nature. 5, 6]. Also, as Max Weber said[7], happiness and joy depend on his ideas, religion and society[8].

A recent study found that tourism development and happiness are positively correlated, but the relationship between these variables is weak and inconsistent [9]. Studies examining whether worldly happiness attracts many people have shown that tourists from other countries tend to visit and spend more time in happy countries. Data are from the World Value Survey through 2014 for the tourism industry in the same period [10]. It also predicted the intention to create the pleasure that visitors feel at the place in relation to giving to others [11]. The results of this study show that there is a close relationship between the happiness level of local residents and their attitude toward tourism and event development [12]. In the study of Ozturk et al. (2015)[13], as a result of multiple regression analysis, it was found that overall happiness perceived by local residents was greatly influenced by positive and negative social and environmental factors as well as positive economic factors.

Cultural tourism is currently a social phenomenon as awareness of cultural heritage increases [14]. This type of tourism encourages cultural connections, which have been found to mediate the relationship between tourism experience and memorable tourism experiences [15]. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) (2018) [16], interest in cultural attractions is increasing worldwide. Following an organization and guidelines based on a work called ‘Planet Happiness’ [17], it is possible to identify some areas of happiness that are considered and measured in the tourism sector. The main areas measured are community, environment, lifelong learning, arts and culture, life satisfaction, mental health, government, health, wellness-economy, social support, and time and work balance. Tangible and intangible cultural tourism (especially cultural tourism) is one of the most important components of modern tourism. It reminds people of the importance of products, contributing to the increase of cultural attractions and communities, while interest in various local products promotes the revival of some endangered indigenous traditions [18]. Various studies try to show the interrelationship between tourism, culture and sustainable development at the international level [19]. This is one of the main factors underpinning the theory of happiness and cultural tourism. Carneiro and Eusebio (2019) [20] found that travel group, type of tour, type of encounter, and satisfaction with travel all play important roles in developing the impact of tourism on happiness.

Several studies have shown that people who feel happy are more likely to give their work and sacrifice more and be involved in creating good things in their communities [21, 22]. This highlights that tourism is one of the most important cultural and social sectors in the world today (Cohen, 2008) [23]. Through a process designed for people’s perceptions, thoughts and emotions, we can show how the relationship between tourism development and happiness works. Happiness can also be considered independent.
