Connect Opencart To Mysqli In Hosting – A few months ago I uploaded a GitHub version of 3.0.3.8 to a 3.0.2.0 site (the site was running PHP 7.4) and the upgrade went fine. A few days earlier I updated another 3.0.2.0 site with the 3.0.3.8 download page version (this site was also running PHP 7.4). Fine upgraded.
I uploaded the latest version 3.0.3.8 (GitHub version) to a third site (which also runs PHP 7.4), went to the /install folder in the browser, got the message “PHP 8.0+ required” and the upgrade script never got started.

… and the upgrade script started. However, it was quickly stopped with a JSON parsing error. Error see attached picture. After looking at the mysqli.php code referenced in the error message, it appears that Upgrade is trying to alter one of the database tables with an ALTER statement, but cannot connect to the database. Line 52 referenced in the error message is an exception that occurs when a connection cannot be established.
How To Migrate Your Php Mysql Apps [easy Guide]
Looks like there have been some changes to 3.0.3.8 in the last few months to require PHP 8.0???
But the biggest problem is that I can’t fix this JSON error and I can’t refresh my website.
I can tell from the line numbers in the posted error that you don’t have a 3.0.3.8 or 3.0.x.x_Maintenance branch, you have a master branch.
This is a JSON error because functions in OC that expect JSON encoded input don’t check if the input is actually JSON encoded.

Because many functions use uncaught exceptions, these functions return HTML error output to the functions that expect json.

Thanks for the helpful answer. Yes, I accidentally downloaded version 4.0.x.x. I clicked the github link on the OpenCart download page which took me to the 4.0.x.x github page, but the overview section of the same page says version 3.0.3.8. None of the readme or installation instructions on the download gave a version number, but I should have guessed from the filename of the downloaded file (master) that it wasn’t 3.0.3.8. I saw the 3.0.3.8 version in the overview section of the github page and just believed it.

I think someone posted a request to fix the issue, so hopefully others won’t do what I did.

I’m curious about the 3.0.x.x_Maintenance branch. When should I use the maintenance release and how is it different from the 3.0.3.8 branch? I imagine there are some bug fixes in the maintenance department. But should I ever use this version?
It’s easy to make mistakes if you don’t follow developments. Most of the official documentation is out of date or contains errors.

You can see the changes made to the 3.0.x.x_Maintenance branch since the release of 3.0.3.8 in the link below. Eventually these changes may be released as a new version.
It is generally safe to use but may change if more or major changes are made in the future. There is always a chance that a change will break compatibility with an extension.

As for the documentation: I’ve been getting a lot of Facebook ads lately announcing how great OpenCart is and I agree. I’ve been using it since version 1.4. But I don’t use it every day. I download a new version every few years and if so, I’m not up to date. Because of this, it’s important that the downloads page on Github at least references the current version being downloaded from the site. Facebook also advertises how easy OpenCart is to use, but OpenCart’s documentation is so outdated that it no longer matches the interface (especially on the admin side). I don’t even think I can find a reference to the version anywhere in the 3.0.3.8 download. It still mentions version 2.x!

For example, every time I update a website to a new version of OpenCart, I forget to copy the contents of the upload save folder to the website save folder and it happens again the next day. And I don’t see anything in the readme files, instructions, etc that even needs to be done. I only lost half an hour this time because I found my post from a year ago on this issue and when I tried to access the admin page after the upgrade I found that this was causing my Server 500 problem . Sorry, I’m new to OpenCart. In this particular case, some seem preoccupied with showing off how smart they are, rather than just offering to help when they’re supposed to be helpful. I’m not complaining, just sharing my experience.
I’ve recently retired from a 40 year career in software development (mainly Java and multimedia training development for the defense industry), so I’m aware that documentation updates are almost never done.
