Customers often perform post-upload processing on groups of files transferred from on-premises to Amazon S3 through Storage Gateway. Until now, it was not possible to reliably initiate these downstream processes based on individual file upload events. Today we are releasing a new Storage Gateway feature for File Gateway.

Notification of file upload event. It allows you to create event-driven pipelines to power serverless Amazon S3 object processing scenarios. File upload notifications are available with the new File Gateway starting today in all regions where Storage Gateway is available. For existing file gateways, it will be available in the next scheduled software update.

This blog will walk you through the workflow of processing an instance enabled by this new File Gateway feature.

Uploading Files To Aws S3 With Node.js

Each notification type can be used to simplify workflow processes for different use cases for files uploaded to Amazon S3. A working file set notification is a good way to signal the completion of an upload activity when the contents of the file gateway cache can be treated as a single data set. Alternatively, file upload notifications are useful when multiple clients are writing to the storage gateway and clients want to initiate separate processing workflows based on specific groups of files. You can call the NotifyWhenUploaded API to trigger a working file set notification. In contrast, file upload notifications provide enhanced performance because they are delivered continuously for each file uploaded to Amazon S3. Not only does this give you more granularity in your instructions, it also allows you to decouple your S3 object processing logic from your File Gateway.

Although Amazon S3 event notifications are great for many use cases, we don’t recommend using them to notify you that a file has been uploaded to Amazon S3 via File Gateway. Partial file uploads to Amazon S3 may occur temporarily when File Gateway is required for cache usage. File Gateway eventually fully uploads the file as part of this process, but Amazon S3 event notifications still trigger upload notifications in the meantime. Since these instructions refer to partially uploaded files, they cannot be relied upon to trigger downstream processing. In these situations, a more robust and reliable mechanism is to use notifications generated by File Gateway.

Customers often use File Gateway to write multiple individual files that are part of a larger backup or vault operation. The new file upload notification feature allows customers to create scalable workflows using multiple services. This allows customers to group individual files for downstream operations such as archive creation or post-processing of Amazon S3 objects.

As part of this processing workflow, perform the following numbered steps in the previous solution architecture diagram:

1. An on-premises client writes multiple files to a File Gateway file share. For certain operations each file is stored uniquely using a standard filename hashing mechanism or by writing all files to a unique directory name on the file gateway. The job also writes a “manifest” file that lists all the “data” files for that operation. A processing workflow organizes these “data” files into logical sets for downstream processing. Multiple process workflows can run in parallel when different “manifest” files are uploaded.

2. After each file is successfully uploaded to Amazon S3, the file gateway sends a file upload notification to Amazon EventBridge. These events are received via the default event bus.

3. EventBridge triggers a rule for each File Gateway file upload notification event. It delivers the entire event payload as a message to Amazon SQS. Amazon SQS allows you to quickly move events from your default EventBridge event bus. This gives workflows the ability to sustain a large number of events and absorb backpressure caused by delays in downstream processing steps.

4. The Lambda function reads and processes messages from the Amazon SQS queue. This function parses the event information, appends the event type specification, and sends it to the EventBridge custom event bus. The primary role of this function is to identify whether a file upload notification corresponds to a “manifest” or “data” file event by matching the relevant part of the Amazon S3 object key name.

5. An EventBridge rule is triggered when a “manifest” file upload event is delivered to the corresponding custom event bus. As mentioned in step 1, the “manifest” file contains a list of all the “data” files that belong to the same logical set. The EventBridge target for this rule is a step functions state machine. It performs a series of iterative steps that match the contents of the “manifest” file read from Amazon S3 to the contents of an Amazon DynamoDB table that is continuously updated in the next step.

6. When the “data” file upload event is delivered, another EventBridge rule is triggered. The EventBridge target for this rule is a Lambda function that writes selected information about Amazon S3 objects uploaded to a DynamoDB table. This aspect of the workflow provides a persistence layer for file upload notifications. This configuration allows a fully managed, scalable backend to store metadata for large logical file sets created from “data” files that can take a long time to upload.

7. Once the step functions state machine matches the content of the “manifest” with the corresponding item in the DynamoDB table, the workflow successfully matches the entire logical set of data files uploaded to Amazon S3. The state machine communicates this by publishing completion events to another EventBridge custom event bus.

Now let’s take a closer look at how to configure the key aspects of the above solution. Summarize the functional roles of Lambda, Step Functions, and Amazon DynamoDB. It is beyond the scope of this post to provide details about these components.
