After coming up with the idea for The Shiok Shop last year, I initially tried to set up a Shopify store – most of the brands I work with are on Shopify and I wanted to follow suit. Exabytes currently offers three different eCommerce plans – Lite, Standard and Business. Since the setup fee (a hefty $499) is waived for the standard plan, I leaned more heavily on it over the other two options. Pricing is in line with the norm, with the mid-range Shopify plan at $79 (~S$108) per month. And unlike Shopify, the folks at Exabytes help you design your web store according to your requirements. It’s still template-based – coding a new web store from scratch will cost a pretty penny – but you can carry over your preferred aesthetic and the team will do their best to deliver it.
I had never sold anything online before and knew next to nothing about setting up and running an online store. So before committing to the program, I decided to take advantage of the free consultation that was posted. I met with E. Lynn, Janice and Brianna on a Zoom call and they walked me through all the details needed to set up the web store. They brought up issues that I hadn’t thought about before: for example, whether the webshop should use a new domain (e.g. www.theshiokshop.com), or a subdomain (e.g. shop). Feel. It probably helps with SEO too, although I’m not entirely sure how. The above was just one of the many things we discussed during the video session, and I will say that I definitely left the conversation with a clearer sense of what it takes to start my own online store. After some consideration, I took the leap of faith and chose the standard eCommerce plan.
After I joined as a customer, I was sent an extensive Google sheet. It contained all the information needed to build the web store. I remember being surprised at how much information was required – building an online store wasn’t as easy as it looked. I first chose a theme and left it to the Exabytes team to customize it to reflect the sea/yellow palette of Wah So Shiok. I managed to make some banners for the webshop (you can find them on the website), but I got stuck in making a new logo. I ended up asking Exabytes to provide me with a new logo based on the Wah So Shiok font – which they did at no extra cost – and after a few iterations we landed on what I thought was perfect (see image below). I also asked for their help in writing the FAQ and terms and conditions, and they also guided me in setting up a Stripe and PayPal account to integrate with the web store.

Again, I admit I’m very much a tech noob. This is perhaps not surprising given my penchant for mechanical watches and sewing. However, this meant that I relied heavily on the support of the Exabytes team, who held my hand throughout the process of setting up the webshop and took care of most of the technical parts. This allowed me to concentrate on what I do best – doing Wah So Shiok reviews and reaching out to my favorite brands to get them on The Shiok Shop list. Business development, if you will.
The installation process was relatively simple – Exabytes will tell you what they need and if you need help providing the assets (like I did with the logo) they’ll be happy to help.
Overall, I have to say that setting up The Shiok Shop with Exabytes was easy and simple. I’m happy with my decision – having the Exabytes team guide me every step of the way has saved me an immeasurable amount of time. If you’re like me and don’t have much ecommerce experience or are just a tech noob, I highly recommend choosing Exabytes over Shopify (which requires you to be a lot more independent).
The caveat is that the store runs on Exabyte’s proprietary e-commerce platform called Easystore, rather than a more established platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.). However, I did not find this to be a problem and I found Easystore’s functionality sufficient for my needs. It allows me to sell on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat, Shopee, Lazada and even Tiktok if I wanted to! It also integrates with hundreds of apps, such as Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Lalamove, Quickbooks and more. In terms of payment gateways, Stripe, Paypal and bank transfer are accepted, with “buy now pay later” options such as Atome and Hoolah also available. They even have Favepay and Grabpay – impressive to say the least.

To top it all off, there’s even an Easystore mobile app so users can get real-time order notifications, analytics reports (views, orders, sales volume, etc.) and add/remove/edit products from their mobile phone. The app is very user friendly and everything was intuitive.
Overall, I really appreciate the Exabytes team for helping me bring The Shiok Shop to life. They made the process as seamless as possible and were always just an email away if I needed help. Emails were also answered promptly – they never failed to get back to me within 24 hours on weekdays. And every time I asked for help/changes I was given a deadline and often delivered well ahead of schedule. For example, I recently asked Exabyte to redesign my stock customer invoice template to reflect the webshop’s navy blue/yellow colors, and they fulfilled my request in 2-3 days – much faster than the week I was quoted. I have nothing but praise for Exabyte’s support and I think that is what sets them apart from their competitors.
